Have you ever heard of deep linking? It refers to the practice of websites providing links to the deep pages of other websites. For example, if you were a cook with a catering service and you saw a cooking blog with a great recipe, you might provide a link for the recipe on your website, which would allow your readers would go see it. That page you referred them to is called a deep page, because it is deeper in the hierarchy than the homepage, and it features some valuable content that search engines prioritize when they determine what sites are best for people’s results.

Deep pages and deep links are the bread and butter of what most search engines use for their results. You might not be sure why, but there’s an easy way to understand. Let’s say you were looking for a good restaurant to go to, and your choices are one restaurant that lots of people have mentioned to you, and a restaurant that no one has ever told you about. From the standpoint of where you’re likely to go, it’s probably going to be the one people have told you about (unless, of course, it’s gotten a lot of negative feedback).

The same is true of websites. Links to a website are the equivalent of word of mouth for the Internet. If a lot of people find your website valuable, they will link to it to show their support and interest. If people don’t like it, they will probably still link to it to use it as a counterexample of their beliefs or opinions. What’s important, though, is that it is influential. This is key. If you have a website that is infamous, it’s still (ideally) a valuable addition to the Internet because it holds an opposing viewpoint.

All About Traffic
In other words, websites with a lot of traffic and a lot of links are seen as more valuable to people than websites with less traffic and fewer links, regardless of how the content on that website is perceived. The point of search engines is to locate what people are interested in finding when they search for certain keywords and topics, so in most cases, whatever is most popular and influential will rise to the top because of deep linking and search engine optimization for increased traffic.

To work deep linking to your advantage, you have to understand how it works. Having links pointing to your website (especially one-way links) shows that there are people interested in whatever your website has to offer. Before your website is highly optimized and has a lot of volume, you won’t be getting enough traffic to really get a lot of deep linking. This is why there are services called “link building services”, because their job is deliberately to help people who are just starting out get some links pointing to their website.

If a link building service gets you enough deep linking, you will see your website rank higher, more people will find you through those deep links, and you will be better able to hold your position because of word of mouth.
