The Right (and wrong) Way to Link Build with SEO

If you ask any SEO professional what the big secret is for getting on Page 1 of Google then they will surely have link building on the top of their list. It is an imperative component to Search Engine Optimization. The absolute best way to build links is through getting other websites to link to yours without any action on your part. This kind of link is called a “backlink” and indicate who is paying attention to your web page. This is done by creating top-notch content that is interesting, informative, and useful to your visitors that they will want to read and tell the world about.

The hard part is getting high quality websites to backlink to yours. As I mentioned in my book, Google is just one big popularity contest. To put things into perspective, you could be good friends with all the “mathletes”, chess club and band geeks but that probably won’t get you to become the prom king or queen. Being best buds with the star Quarterback or cheer leading squad could definitely do the trick however.

To determine the quality of the backlink, take a look at the following: The source of the link: Who is it coming from? Is it coming from CNN.com or joepublic.blogspot.com?

Why they are linking to your site: Are they bragging about your product/services or article that you wrote? Are they in the same field as you? Is it in context with what you are all about? Websites that are within your own area of expertise are more beneficial than ones that contain a hodgepodge of everything. When it’s the latter then that usually is a red flag to Google and other search engines saying that the site is probably a link farm and thus not legit. This could hurt more than it helps! The only thing worse is if you PAY for those kinds of links!

The link itself: It really does matter what the text surrounding the hyperlink HTML code says. For example:
– “Click HERE to view the best SEO expert in the world.”
– “Be sure to check out the best SEO expert in the world.”
Having the text in inside the hyperlink HTML code being rich in keywords or having it match your key phrase is the best way to truly have a quality linkback to your site.

Link building isn’t a science. To quote the movie “Field of Dreams” if you build it, they will come.
