Reciprocal Link Directories Don’t Work

If you would like to learn google seo techniques that work, please visit http://www.seowizz.net/

Working in the SEO industry it is not uncommon to receive reciprocal link requests. Please link to me using the below details and I will send you a link back. These are the kind of generic emails that I open on a daily basis; remarkably some of the requests come from other SEO companies.

There is a fundamental problem with these kind of links but let me first explain exactly what these companies were proposing. Firstly they want a link from my own high authority, high page rank home page. In return for this very helpful link they want to give me a link from a page on their site which is basically a link directory made up of every other company they have ever exchanged links with.

Remember a lot of these requests come from other SEO firms, firms that offer ‘professional’ SEO services to clients, yet they are using techniques that not only do not work but also can see your site penalised by Google. It was only 2007 when a lot of real estate companies were been banned on Google for doing exactly the same types of exchange to artificially increase rank.

Apart from it been against Google’s terms there is another problem with what they were asking. They wanted me to provide them with a highly effective link in exchange for a link from a page with no page rank, that looks no better than a common link farm, which means if the page ever got caught out, there is a chance my site may be penalised. This is a dangerous proposition for a webmaster that is not SEO savvy and sees at as a way of gaining a valuable back link. An SEO firm selling services should know better than requesting these kinds of unethical links. It is the kind of practice that leaves a bad taste in people’s mouths regarding SEO.

In fact no reciprocal links work anymore unless they are attributed naturally pointing visitors to genuine pieces of quality content. As SEO we should be looking to generate one way quality links through optimised content distribution and effective link bait. Bothering other webmasters for reciprocal links is only worthwhile if you are willing to provide real quality in return, otherwise don’t waste your time. So in conclusion, if you receive an email with this sort of request please check, where the return link is coming from, if it is a page with an endless list of random sites, this is a farm, stay away from it.
