Public Relations and Promotional Products

From the Wikipedia the definition of Public Relations is: “a field concerned with maintaining public image for high-profile people, commercial businesses and organisations, non-profit associations or programs”. The key words here being image and profile, as especially in business image is everything. A company that takes an active part in the community, whether it’s local, national or even global, by understanding their values and implementing appropriate policies and practices, will foster a healthy perception in the public eye.

Promotional products can play a big role in building good public relations. Doing something good in the community gives you a good feeling, and letting people know you’re behind it can also raise your company profile and generate more business, so it’s a win-win situation. Promotional gifts allow you to do that with subtlety without making it look like your just blowing your own trumpet! Here’re a few ideas to accomplish this.

Support local and national charities by providing needed supplies

Find out what the needs are of your local communities and charities and supply them. It may be as simple as needed stationery, such as pens and notepads, or clothing such as T-shirts and Caps. You can supply them with your logo and perhaps a tagline along the lines of “Supporting the local community”. But talk to your community and discover what their needs are so that you can supply something that’s appropriate, to ensure it is gratefully received and put to use, both helping them and in turn helping you. Building this kind of mutual relationship can be very beneficial to both parties.

You can also try taking part in the larger national charity events such as Red Nose Day and Children in Need.

Sponsor events and local sport teams

See if you can sponsor local events, such as a school sports day, and local sports teams such as football teams both youth and adult. Supply prizes for sports day events and you can also supply fund raising items too such as badges, mugs and footballs, all imprinted with the team and your logo, with maybe a message of support.

You can also supply items they may need for the day, such a paper cups, and plates, again all imprinted with your logo.

Supply the local scouts and other local boy and girl clubs with items for a raffle. And if you also supply the printed raffle tickets you can also put your logo on them too, which will be distributed throughout the community.

Support important causes

There are many important causes that can be supported in a number of ways. Hospitals are always looking for blood donors. To help encourage people to donate you can offer a number of imprinted items to anyone that donates, such as T-shirts and stress balls, with your logo and message such as “I gave blood”.

Many communities have shelters and kitchens for homeless people, offering free meals and shelter. These places will always appreciate supplies to help out, so you can offer imprinted blankets, clothing, toiletries, sleeping bags and anything else they may suggest such as imprinted aprons for the kitchen staff. You can also offer items to reward the volunteers who help out there.

Environmental issues have become the centre of attention too all over the world. Show how your company is environmentally aware by using promotional items that are eco-friendly. You can also supply items to the community such as cotton shopper bags to encourage people not to use plastic supermarket bags.
Support educational programs

Many schools hold special days to celebrate and educate about specific subjects such as World Braille Day, Food Allergy and Intolerance Week, Fair Trade fortnight, No Smoking day and many, many more. You’ll find that’s there’s at least 10 days in every month where a specific issue is being raised. They won’t all be recognised by all schools and communities, but many will, so find out which ones are important to your local community and offer to help out with the supply of any items they may need.

You only have to look to the big supermarkets to see how seriously PR is taken by business, I’m sure you’ve collected many a school voucher in Tescos, Sainsburys and ASDA. But it isn’t only limited to the big corporations; these opportunities are available to all.

Remember: Promotional products can help you do something positive for the community and create a good image for your company at the same time.
