If you had a store just off the main street you are going to want to direct traffic to your door in order to make money.
It is not unlike online business owners who are trying to make money online. They too have to get online business traffic to know that they exist and attempt to get online business traffic to visit their web site or their home based business will suffer as a result.
When you think there are billions of websites on the internet to get your site listed in the top ten positions under a certain keyword search is not a simple thing.
Without doing this your online business could suffer. Moms working from home understand the benefits of advertising because of their experience shopping for their family and good advertising results in online business sales.
The process of getting your site ready and backing it up with other credible websites is called Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
This is a huge topic that could rightfully take up a whole bookshelf and more but for the beginner which is who I write for a basic understanding of some of the processes may help you do some SEO work for yourself and save you some hard earned money that could be better spent on other forms of advertising.
This is a big topic and won’t be covered by any one article but in reality most of the articles that I have written could be seen as having SEO as the common denominator.
To begin with it is important to remember that as a general rule people aren’t getting on the internet to make a purchase. As hard as this might seem to the budding entrepreneur this is an important message to think about as it then begs the question: “Why do people get on the internet?”
The answer to this question would have to be to find information and for entertainment.
If you look at the information that people are searching for you can begin to understand how search engines have been tailored to grade the relevance of the information contained in web pages and then rank them according to this grading against certain keywords and keyword phrases.
Entertainment speaks for itself when you examine sites such as YouTube and World of Warcraft both sites are astronomically large and feed people’s desire for entertainment.
The concept of SEO work on your online business website needs to take these points into consideration otherwise you are starting in the wrong place. Quite often what happens if you start in the wrong place is that you get frustrated with the poor results and then turn to extreme measures to try and get the results that you desire. In SEO language this is called ‘Black Hat SEO’ and just like in the movies it is considered undesirable.
A quick example of this is the comments that you can put on people’s blogs. A few years ago you could purchase programs that would blast comments to a hundred blogs in a few minutes and these comments would then form back links to your website. This was a Black Hat tactic.
Now days this is not as effective if it is at all because blog owners often won’t allow comments onto their blogs if they don’t think that the comment adds value and so the delete them. Also sites like Wordpress give bloggers the opportunity to use a ‘No Follow Tag’ and this effectively stops the search engines recognizing the back links and so render them almost useless.
To this end it is not recommended to utilize Black Hat SEO tactics because although they seem like a good idea at the time if you get caught at it then your site will be ignored by the search engines and all your work will have been for nothing.
To continue White Hat SEO tactics you should continue to work on your website promotion through articles, blogging and other tactics that you will need to follow in order to get your site recognized and rated as relevant by the Search Engine Spiders.
