New Figures for Twitter
No study is really needed to check the significance of Twitter and how the service is changing how people are communicating. But studies are good for validating claims. A new study on the service, this time conducted by R.J.Metrics reveals some of the new statistics related to the use of micro-blogging.
The study involves the analysis of 2 million tweets. The company downloaded 2 million tweets from around 50,000 mcro-blogging users. The tweets were from the last few months of 2009 and the company was able to download more than 3,000 tweets from each of the 50,000 users. The number of Twitter users represent less than a tenth of total users. By the end of 2009, there were already 75 million users. Every month more than 6 million new users sign up for the service.
According to the study, this sign-up rate is about 20% lower than the service’s peak rate during July 2009. According to the accounts studied, about25% have no followers. A bigger percentage, around 40% have not sent a single tweet at the time if the study. Eighty percent have posted tweets fewer than 10 times. “Only about 17% of registered Twitter accounts sent a message in December 2009.
This study does not really provide certain answers about the future of instant messaging – micro-blogging. Twitter could grow even bigger in the coming months. Certainly it will grow into even greater prominence and even if it doesn’t there are already millions of people who are finding great use of the service in their business. And even without new users, the present number of Twitter users – 75 million is still a pretty respectable number.
Even traditional media does not offer such a following for free. That is the beauty of social media. They are powerful tools for communicating with millions of users for such affordable fees. In fact, Twitter and a host of other social media are free and the only investment you need to make is time, which depending on your representative can be really cheap for your business or really expensive. You need to make sure that the person doing the Tweeting for you can really represent your business well but do not cost your business much. If you are a very busy business executive for example, just imagine the time you will be spending on Twitter and compute if the hour or two you will spend on the service will be worth it.
