Is Your Marketing Way Off Target?

There is nothing more important that identifying your target audience. This is absolutely without a doubt Marketing 101, and if you don’t learn it, you will probably never be successful in your marketing efforts.

Now let’s ponder on this for a moment. Would you really try to sell a television to someone who doesn’t even watch tv? Not many people would. Why? Because there is little, if any prospects, to this type of marketing.

Your target market should focus on those who not only need your products, but also those who can afford to pay for it if your are selling say, luxury items with a huge price tag.

Do the same rules apply to online businesses? Of course they do. While it does take a little more effort to reach your target market online, the internet offers something brick and mortars do not.

A larger reach.

Most places that you might market or advertise in do not have detailed demographics information on their visitors or audience. Some companies do try to gather this information, but it is a like long up-hill battle as most users are unwilling to give out such personal information on the internet.

While you may not have all the demographics information available to you, there are some avenues you can take to sharpen the focus just a bit. If you were selling a workout product geared toward people who like to exercise, you can automatically rule out the “auto sites” or ones that appeal to say auto lovers, as such sites where you only reach auto enthusiasts.

So, using just a little common sense, you can then identify the websites where you can place your advertising or focus your marketing for potential customers.

The next step is dimply to track your results. This is an area where many aspiring entrepreneurs miss the boat. There are numerous ways to track where your traffic are coming from. Probably one of the easiest ways to track is to use an email address which is unique to that specific ad.

You can create different forms for each ad where you can build a keyword term or phrase right into the form, that the individual filling it out will never see it, and that will let you know exactly where they saw the ad.

Another great way to find your target market is your contact form on your website, which should have a drop down menu asking those filling it out how they heard about you.

By focusing on YOUR target market you are maximizing your overall returns.
