Good Communication is the Secret Ingredient to IM Success

The items on these lists probably all appear to be conflicting. One list will claim “patience” is the key to becoming an IM success.Another is going to state that you need to have lots of business savvy. You’ll also see some that will state that you should be really creative if you want to succeed. And, of course, you can’t forget about all of the people stating that all you have to do is buy their software package if you want to be the next big name in IM!

The truth is that all of these things are important to your success (well, perhaps not all of those software packages, but the other stuff). You must have patience, business savvy and creativity if you want to achieve success. None of these things count much, however, if you are unable to communicate well with people.

Good communication means more than just creating a great sales page. You can find a highly skilled copywriter to create that for you. Good communication is more than having a beautiful website with a really long FAQ section. A quality designer and writer can do those things for you. If you want to be a good communicator, you need to develop interpersonal communication skills, not just straightforward copywriting. How do you get that?

1. Respond to each email you get within 24 hours of it hitting your inbox. This is not a jest. You don’t have to write a long answer for each mail. You can just inform the person who emailed you that you’ve gotten his email and will be getting back to him soon. It is a good idea to include text that references something the original emailer has written. This helps the person you email tell your mail apart from the automated replies that other IMers use.

2. Avoid letting the telephone go on ringing. Don’t screen your calls. You should always try to answer the telephone by the third ring. Do this even if the Caller ID tells you that the call is from a person that you truly do not wish to talk to. The good news is that there is, nevertheless, an exemption to this rule. You don’t have to fret about being tied to your telephone 24/7. Instead, just schedule certain “business” hours during which you are available take calls. Put these hours up on your website and mention them in your voice mail message. And, naturally, every caller who leaves a message deserves to have his call returned.

3. Follow up with customers to be certain that they have gotten your memos, emails, messages, etc. This will indicate to the person that you genuinely care about communicating with them. You’ll endear yourself more with the people you work with and who purchase from you if you ask them if they have any questions and double check to make sure that they understood the points you were trying to make.
