Establish a Twitter and Implement a Social Media Guideline
Are you ready to take advantage of social media for 2010? There are two things you can begin to do for your business in relation to social media: 1.) establish a Twitter account and 2.) Establish and implement a social media policy.
Twitter is a micro-blogging service that allows users to post very short updates and information online that can be read in the Twitter feed of followers. Feeds are updated in real time so people can instantly read whatever messages you post online. Twitter can be a great tool for businesses because it can be used as an announcement board, a communication channel for customer service, a promo channel, etc. You can use it for different purposes in your business. Twitter is very easy to set up and very easy to manage. It is a very good starting point for using social media in business. You don’t have to start with Twitter if you think that there are other social media that fit your business model perfectly. But if you don’t know where to start and want to start using social media already, Twitter is a good social network.
Another thing you must do as soon as you get into social media is to establish a social media policy. Your policy will guide your employees and everyone directly related to your business on what to do with social media or how to go about social media use. Your guide should not just apply to Twitter but to all kinds of social media. Having a social media policy is essential if you are going to outsource your social media tasks. So make sure that you have that in place whether you are going to do the tweeting yourself or you will assign the task to someone else. The policy should protect your business and your employees when it comes to their social media use. You need to make sure you establish a social media policy even before you become a heavy user of social media. You may not be too active in social media yet but your employees may already be using social media daily.
If you want to use social media in your business but really do not have the time to manage them, hire a virtual assistant. A virtual assistant is a worker who can do a variety of tasks for your business including managing your social networking accounts.

Good Post. Though a Twitter account is a good resource for social media, it’s becoming decreasingly effective – it’s important that when generating b2b leads, your company remembers to pick up the phone and call your target markets. But I do agree with you, being available through a variety of SM outlets is key. What do your viral assistant do?
