It is wrong to think that making a website is just a case of putting together some text and pictures, getting it online, and then sitting back as the money rolls in.

When you write your website, keep in mind the keywords that potential customers will type in to find you. Make your website URL includes these keywords if possible. As an example, if your keyword is ‘website design’ and you are targeting customers in Ireland, it would be ideal to have a web address that has both ‘website design’ and ‘Ireland’ in it.
You should also make use of your chosen keywords in the title and header of each page of your website. Also, make sure you get your keyword ratio for your site text approximately at 5% of words being keywords. The point of this is that it makes it easier for search engines to work out what your website is about. The more they know about this, the more favourably they will rank your website in their search results.
Adding the name of a location, either before or after the product or service you are offering, is something to consider too. By adding a location to the keyword you instantly remove the vast amount of competing websites as your competition. You get more focused and targeted visitors to your site, which is great because the more focused and targeted they are, the more likely you are to make a sale.
Having made sure that your on-site SEO is in place, you next need to look at “backlinking”. If you over look this aspect of SEO, Google, Yahoo and Bing will almost certainly ignore your website. Your website will be ranked according to how accurately you have performed your SEO and the amount of sites that are linking to yours. You objective is to find ways to get other websites to link yours. The more links you get, the higher your website will rank.
